Development of promising business areas remains one of the priorities of the ARMZ strategy. The Mining Division is defined as the responsibility center providing the industry and Russian Federation with uranium and other strategic metals. Development of the Division activities in extraction of raw materials and manufacture of various products takes place in the following three directions within the scope of the set strategic goal, which consists in an increase in the share of revenue from non-uranium businesses up to 30% by 2030:
- Expanding the inventory of extracted metals: rare, rare earth, precious metals and their alloys;
- Increasing the conversion extent of the extracted raw materials to include metals and alloys, as well as other hi tech products further down the line.
- Production of mining machinery to provide the sites of the Division engaged in extraction of raw materials with high-performance equipment, as well as sales of products on foreign markets.
The plans are to develop both those directions in cooperation with the allied divisions of the Rosatom State Corporation, and in so doing, to open the new development venues for ARMZ itself.Fig. Product Portfolio of Existing and Emerging Businesses of JSC Atomredmetzoloto
Expansion of the product portfolio is impossible without expanding the geography of the development of new businesses. Atomredmetzoloto, JSC, both independently and in cooperation with partners, is currently implementing several projects in different parts of Russia. In the traditional area of its activities, i. e. in the Trans-Baikal Territory, the transition from mining to producing high-calorie (sized) coal allowed expansion of the list of its consumers; processing of technogenic wastes of pyrite cinders solves some environmental issues; reviving the lithium concentrate extraction at the Zavitinskoye deposit will provide the new business areas of the country with raw materials; production of mining machinery will allow the use of our own domestic equipment in mines, and its eco-friendly properties will improve working conditions and increase the efficiency of the Division activities. The new product manufacturing began by increasing the depth of processing of the mineral resources base: scandium oxide and fluoride, as well as aluminum-scandium ligatures in the future in Kurgan Region in the Urals. The works on a number of new large-scale projects in collaboration with the partners from non-uranium industries are conducted on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago (Pavlovskoye project, extraction of lead-zinc concentrates), in Tomsk Region (titanium-zirconium sands), as well as gold and silver mining at the gold-uranium deposit in South Yakutia. The Division also cooperates with a number of foreign partners (such as the French company Aramine) in the form of industrial partnership in mining machinery production.
The Mining Division looks more broadly at the possibilities of implementing the projects on extraction of other types of raw materials within the scope of development of the new product types in order to meet current and future needs of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation. Moreover, the priority is given to mining of metals, which are used in the most breakthrough areas of the modern economy development, such as additive technologies, robotics, energy storage systems, high-temperature and renewable energy, etc. Some of the above projects, e. g. scandium, lithium, zirconium, titanium, and other metals, are already developed. The development concepts are also worked out and negotiations with potential consumers and partners from other industries are held in order to provide them with raw materials (rare-earth metals, boron, stibium, niobium, and a number of other metals and their compounds), as well as to maximize the use of competencies in raw materials extraction.
