ARMZ Uranium Holding Co.: Additional Yellow Cake Processing Project Continues
Priargunsky Industrial Mining and Chemical Union, PSJC (PIMCU, PJSC) leaching plant has begun pilot tests of processing method for yellow cake received from Khiagda, JSC.
Ammonium polyuranate, or yellow cake, is the end product of enterprises producing uranium using borehole in-situ leaching technology – Dalur, JSC and Khiagda, JSC. Its drawback was the increased humidity (up to 30%). Lowering the humidity to 1.5-2% is very important not to reduce the logistics costs but also for convenience of further processing to receive high purity uranium compounds at the enterprise of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation – fuel company TVEL, JSC.
Dalur, JSC solved the issue back in 2015 when the ammonium polyuranate drying system was launched. At the launch of the new production line representatives of TVEL noted that after lowering the humidity the product complies with the basic quality specifications of ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials).
Yellow cake produced by Khiagda, PJSC is to be processed at the Priargunsky Industrial Mining and Chemical Union PSJC (PIMCU, PJSC), also included under the control of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. “We have begun pilot tests which will allow us to make the final decision. Initial tests have shown that this method will allow us to additionally reduce costs within the holding. Khiaga, PJSC and PIMCU, PJSC are geographically close, furthermore, PIMCU has its own leaching plant. This excludes the costs for technology development and purchase of equipment,” explains First Deputy Director General and Executive Director of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. Victor Svyatetskiy.
Yellow cake is processed into concentrated uranium oxide – pure product with minimal humidity. This allows further high-quality processing at enterprises of TVEL, JSC. Additionally, absence of moisture and high uranium content lowers the shipping costs. For PIMCU, as the volume of finished ore product decreases, loading extraction units of the leaching plant with additional uranium will allow to optimize the technological process.
