Practical aspects of extraction of REM in Russia were discussed at the conference of the Gintsvetmet Institute
Specialists of JSC Atomredmetzoloto took part in the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Topical issues of obtaining and application of REM and RM-2017", which was held in Moscow on June 21-22 at the non-ferrous metals research institute JSC "Gintsvetmet Institute", which is the oldest in Russia.
Ruslan Dimukhamedov, Director of Business Development of ARMZ Uranium Holding in his speech drew attention to the state of the global market of rare earth metals, the economic aspects of mining of the REM in Russia, as well as the need to stimulate domestic demand and the development of industries consuming REM.
In his report, the company's top manager noted that new projects experience strong competition from already operating industries, which in turn have a greater development potential with significantly less investment. At the same time, domestic consumers interested in REM products of the upper parts are forced to use foreign raw materials due to the lack of intermediate processing facilities in the country.
Thus, an effective measure to improve the situation on the domestic REM market should be an integrated approach that includes both measures to support and stimulate commercial production, and production for strategic industries.
As a successful example of this approach, R. Dimukhamedov presented the project of the associated extraction of scandium from the productive solutions of the uranium mining enterprise of JSC Dalur, within the framework of which the commissioning of the pilot plant at the site in the Kurgan region is already under way. After completion of the commissioning works, it is planned to produce up to 1.5 tons of scandium oxide per year. This raw material for the production of 50 tons of aluminum-scandium alloy, used, in particular, in the aviation and space industries. The holding already has agreements with a number of companies on the supply of final products.
