ARMZ Invested Nearly RUB 300 Million in Reducing Negative Impact on Environment in Regions of Operation
In Trans-Baikal Territory, Kurgan region and the Republic of Buryatia, RUB 56,292 million were spent on air and RUB 61,954 million on water resource protection. A total of RUB 128 million was spent on land conservation and waste management.
An environmental safety service operates at each enterprise; it monitors the state of the environment, assesses the environmental impact of production facilities, and develops measures to preserve the environment. The radiation safety laboratories constantly monitor the content of radionuclides in the sanitary protection zone.
Every year, enterprises undergo audits for compliance with international environmental standards. In 2019, the flagship enterprise of Russian uranium mining, PIMCU, PJSC, successfully passed two external international audits for compliance of the implemented integrated quality management and environmental management system with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
«The main objective of ARMZ in terms of environmental policy is to minimize the environmental impact of production and preserve the environment for future generations,» notes Vsevolod Galinov, Chief Safety Inspector, ARMZ. «Each of our enterprises has a set of approved indicators for exposure to air, water, soil, and limits for waste disposal. As a responsible subsoil user, we strive not only to comply with these standards, but also to reduce them as much as possible.» To this end, in 2019, the holding enterprises implemented 102 initiatives, 64 of which were held at the flagship enterprise of the Russian uranium mining, PIMCU, PJSC, in the Trans-Baikal Territory. In particular, ongoing repairs of the gas treatment and ash collection system of the TPP and Mining and Metallurgical Plant (MMP), the technical re-equipment of the MMP hydraulic transport system, the replacement of mercury-containing lamps with LED ones, the construction of mine water treatment plant at Mine No. 6, etc. 35,607.4 tons of fly ash (the 4th class of waste hazard) were disposed of in the mining industry. In order to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide to the environment, the vanadium catalyst was replaced in the amount of 15,283 tons.
Khiagda, JSC annually holds campaigns to release fish in the rivers of Buryatia as compensation measures. Last year, the region’s aquatic biological resources were replenished with 76 thousand of the Baikal sturgeon fries, this year it is planned to release 19 thousand of grayling fries.
It should be noted that the ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. uses uranium in-situ leaching (ISL) method that is environmentally friendly and safe for nature and humans. Currently, it is the method that has been recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency as the cleanest of all existing methods. Last year, the share of production with ISL in place increased to 60% in the total volume of production. «To extract uranium using ISL method deep under the ground, we use a weak solution of sulfuric acid, which does not adversely affect the environment. The process basically eliminates the possibility of harmful substances entering the fertile layers of soil and aquifers,» said Vladimir Nadelyaev, Chief Ecologist, Khiagda, JSC.
ARMZ environmental policy states that further minimization of the environmental impact will be achieved primarily by reducing the mineral resource development by the mining method and increasing the share of strategic metal production through the expanded implementation of ISL method.
